Sound – Being — Frame
A formal ontology of sound considers the being of sound as a compositional or improvisational element
As such, a sound is an object in the world
A sound is an object existing in time
The possibility of its existence is its latency in time
Time is a kind of nothingness containing within it the possibility of sound
What we perceive as silence is time as the absence of sound
Sound is a latency in silence
Silence is sound in potentia
Sound is realized as a gesture taking place in time
The musical gesture is an action the end of which is the realization of the sound latent in silence
A gesture aimed toward producing sound takes place within a frame
That frame is silence
Silence is to the musician what the blank canvas is to the painter or empty space to the sculptor
Sound is a finitude within the larger frame of silence
Silence is the formal manifestation of time as latency of sound
As such it plays a structural role in the construction of sound objects
Silence between sounds functions as a formal link or a boundary
As a link, silence is the possibility of the combination of sounds on either side of it
As a boundary, silence is the possibility of independence for the sounds on either side of it
Properties of Sound – Possibilities of Sound – Plasticity of Sound
The properties of sound are its content
The properties of sound are pitch, timbre, dynamics and duration
What sound represents is its formal properties. It does not represent a reality independent of itself in the world
Conversely, the sense of sound is its surface, or that collection of its formal properties existent at any given moment
Put another way, sound has no substance other than whatever formal properties it embodies at any given time
As a collection of properties, sound embodies a set of possibilities for elaboration in musical space
These properties are its formal dimensions
These possibilities are realized through its formal dimensions and are expressed through plasticity of form
Formal plasticity can be realized as transposition, variation, repetition, modulation, et al.
These permutations may affect any of the formal properties within the sound object, changing its appearance
Throughout these changes the original sound object may remain recognizable or it may strike us as being something new altogether
A series of timbres no less than a series of pitches may be subject to plastic transformations
These plastic transformations are a function of the gesture and the physical effects it has on sound production
Sound – Silence — Plasticity
The sound object may also disappear as the result of formal plasticity
Duration is the formal dimension of time as realized in sound
Duration is the formal dimension of time as embodied in silence
Through duration time acquires specific plastic value as a compositional or improvisational element
Through its capacity to disappear after a period of time, sound as a temporal object carries the possibility of silence
Through its capacity to be negated by an upsurge of sound, silence as a temporal object is a potential finitude between sounds
The dialectic of sound as latent in silence and silence as potential sound exists at a more fundamental level than the formal relationships between the two
The latter concerns the plastic configuration of the work—its internal and external relationships
The former describes the underlying conditions that make those formal relationships possible
In sum:
Sound and silence are mutually limiting, each existing at the boundary of the other
Sound and silence are thus unstable, each containing within itself the possibility of the other
Sound is plastic and its formal properties mutable
Silence is no less so

Suono – Silenzio – Plasticità

Suono – Essenza -Cornice
