Captain Beefhart con il suo “Trout Mask Replica” aveva aperto nuovi processi nella musica rock quando ancora il rock era in una fase di espansione non esaustiva. L’introduzione dell’atonalità e dell’arte della negazione, le piramidi cacofoniche e l’istinto dei gesti musicali, fecero la loro introduzione grazie a lui, disegnando l’eredità musicale dei “sottoboschi” degli anni a venire.
