Posto che uno degli obiettivi principali fosse l’estensione, le prime cantanti sperimentali si adoperarono per raggiungerlo attraverso i nastri magnetici o le modificazioni timbriche determinate dall’induzione delle macchine elettroniche disponibili nei centri tramite i compositori: esempi illustri vengono da Cathy Barberian o Joan La Barbara che formarono due formidabili coppie in tal senso (Barberian-Berio, La Barbara-Subotnick).
