There are very few all-female, free improvising ensembles in the vibrant free music scene of Portugal. The new trio Arpyies – guitarist-electronics player Ana Gonçalves Albino, French horn player Catarina Custódio Silva, and violinist-electronics player-percussionist Maria do Mar de Brito Lopes (known for her work with the ensembles of violinist Ernesto Rodriguez, Isotope and Variable Geometry Orchestra, and the all-female sextet Lantana) – released its debut album on a label that is located far from Portugal’s musical centers – Lisbon and Porto, the Profound Collective musicians’ collective from the small and remote, mountainous community of the village of Pesinho, but recorded the album live at O’culto da Ajuda in Lisbon.
