Norwegian experimental guitarist and electronics player Ivar Grydeland is known for his work with the genre-spurning, free-improvising quartet Dans les arbes and the trio Huntsville. He is also an Associate Professor at The Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, focusing on musical improvisation and artistic research. He lives on the peninsula of Nesodden, a short ferry ride across the fjord from Oslo, which is a sort of artists’ colony.
Bøyning, brytning (Bending, breaking in Norwegian) is Grydeland’s third solo album and was inspired by his ferry rides to Oslo. It is a sonic abstraction of underwater topography contours, an aquatic inspiration that already informed his debut solo album, Bathymetric Modes (Hubro, 2012).
