Asger Thomsen is a Danish, Copenhagen-based experimental double bass player and composer who works primarily in the field of contemporary improvised music, often inspired by noise and concrete sounds. He explores radical approaches to the double bass as an acoustic sound source, improvising freely with objects and various extended techniques, and focusing on different aspects of raw, unaccompanied soundmaking without overdubbing or other electronic equipment.
Thomsen’s long-running project RHIZOM faithfully captures his experimental approach to sound, the improvisation-composition continuum, and form. It aims to blend the spontaneous and urgent elements of free improvisation with carefully thought-out, composed elements. It premiered at the MINU festival for expanded music in Copenhagen in November 2022 in a one-and-a-half-hour version. Its first recorded version lasts only forty minutes and features
