A Reflection Distorts Over Water features a free-improvising trio initiated by Argentine, Berlin-based, prolific tenor sax player Camila Nebbia (who also did the cover artwork), with American master pianist Marilyn Crispell and rising drummer Lesley Mok (who performed with Nebbia before and plays with another great pianist, Myra Melford’s Fire And Water Quintet). The album was recorded at Nevessa Studio in Woodstock without any prior rehearsal.
The trio played a few pieces inspired by Nebbia’s open scores, one by Mok, and the rest was freely improvised. The trio’s dynamics rely on immediate, profound affinity, the strong-minded, commanding voices of Nebbia, Crispell, and Mok, and their non-hierarchical interplay. The music flows with an organic, powerful manner and sounds like deep, illuminating conversations that have, as Peter Margasak observed in his liner notes, “a connection to the sounds
