American multi-reedist, composer, and educator Marty Ehrlich was a protégé of visionary sax player and composer Julius Hemphill, a co-founder of the World Saxophone Quartet. Ehrlich played in Hemphill’s Big Band and Sextet. He became the musical director of the Sextet after Hemphill’s passing in 1996, the chief researcher for the Julius Hemphill Archive at NYU, and curated Hemphill’s monumental 7-disc box set The Boye’ Multi-National Crusade For Harmony (New World, 2021).
