Matthias Muche is a German. Cologne-based trombonist, composer, improviser, and educator who focuses on the trombone and its inherent sonic phenomena as a spatial and physical instrument. He develops compositional structures that explore the relationship between sound, body, and space.
Muche’s BONECRUSHER project focuses on precise, collective sonic architectures for trombones and percussion. The archaic, acoustic sonic apparatus of the trombone is driven through the “bone crusher,” pulverized, sublimated, and infused with new breath. BONECRUSHER plays music that ranges from sound-sculpture noise drones to walls-of-Jericho-collapsing blasts to delicate webs of air and tone, resonating overtones with layered articulations.
