Polish-born, Berlin-based pianist and keyboard player Marta Warelis insists on being a genre-defying musician who prefers to experiment with as many styles and approaches as possible. She has been involved in many free improvised projects ( her OMAWI trio with double bass player Wilbert de Joode and drummer Onno Govaert, the Turquoise Dream and Plüsch quartets, and collaborations with Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, Ada Rave, Sakina Abdou, Andy Moor, John Butcher, and Dave Rempis), modern jazz (with Dave Douglas New Quartet), and Prog-rock and noise (the Dust Bunny duo with drummer Nasim Lopez).
Still Life with Lemons is Warelis’ first attempt to lead a sextet as a composer and bandleader. The project began when Warelis still resided in Amsterdam, and as part of Bimhuis’s club
