Dream between is the third album of the free improvising trio of Swiss, Lucerne-based sax player Christoph Erb (playing tenor and soprano saxes here, and the head of veto-records), a frequent collaborator with the American, Chicagoan free music scene, with two key members of the Chicagoan vibrant scene and the long-time collaborators, vibes player Jason Adasiewicz, and double bass player Jason Roebke. The album was recorded ten years after the trio’s sophomore album, More Dreams Less Sleep (Veto, 2016), at Constellation in Chicago in October 2025.
The trio’s debut album’s title also addressed the issue of dreams, Yuria’s Dream (Veto, 2024), and the opening, 32-minute title piece actually suggests that this trio is an elaborate dream-like generator. It begins with the soft, intimate, and dreamy sounds of Erb’s gentle, ethereal playing, Adasiewicz’s resonant and crystalline vibes overtones, and Roebke’s sparse touches and bowing on the double bass. This trio explores delicate timbres and conversational dynamics with deep listening, commanding economic articulation, and imaginative sonic vision, often sounding like sound poets or shamans conducting an exotic folk ceremony. The trio let this piece evolve organically and slowly, gravitating toward a spacious, sensual, and hypnotic pulse before surrendering again to its dreamy mode.
The second piece, the 14-minute “Between dreams”, suggests an opposite approach, a playful and restless one. It enjoys playing the uncommon, conversational dynamics of a chamber trio of sax, vibes, and double bass, with generous space for solo parts, but maintains a delicate equilibrium between these gifted improvisers.
