Sean Ali is an American, New York-based double bass player, improvisor, multi-instrumentalist (mandolin, guitar, violin, harmonica, oud), composer, poet, and visual artist. His work explores themes of fractured selves, the unreliability of memory, violence in historical and political rhetoric, dreams and hallucinatory states, nature, and childhood. His performances and recordings frequently incorporate extra-musical media, including spoken word, found objects, field recordings, sound collage, photography, light, and dance.
The Harmonica in My Life – a conscious nod to Morton Feldman’s iconic composition The Viola in My Life (1970/71) – is Ali’s fourth solo album and second officially released solo album, exploring other instruments beyond his primary double bass, following Quartets for Plucked Strings (Neither/Nor, 2025), where he played the bass harmonica alongside field recordings.
