Elisabeth Coudoux is a German, Cologne-based, classically trained, experimental cellist and composer working in free improvisation and contemporary music, with tactile, extended bowing techniques. Her work centres on musical form created in real time – open, fluid and risk-taking, focusing on deep listening, curiosity, and a subtle sense of humour. Chuck Roth is an American, New York-based experimental guitarist, composer, and songwriter who explores the electric guitar’s vast palette of sounds, unprocessed and without effects, objects or pedals, with textural and often fractured guitar language.

Tomaten auf den Augen (Tomatoes on the eyes) is the debut duo album of the working duo of Coudoux and Roth’s, recorded at Tidbit Sonos in Philadelphia in August 2025, during a short American tour. Roth did the cover artwork. The three extended, free improvised pieces are titled “Paper”, “Scissors”, and “Rock”, and capture the exploratory, unpredictable spirit of this meeting.

Coudoux and Roth share a like-minded aesthetic. Their approach to their instruments is deeply physical, uncompromising, and fearless, focusing on exploring timbre, space, and the immediacy and elasticity of sonic resonances unfolding in real time. Their intense, risk-taking yet insightful conversations navigate between intuitive inventions, shapeshifting densities, extended techniques, and fragile silences, and they often sound as an inseparable electroacoustic entity. They often sound as having the most intimate conversations but with quite a volatile, provocative spirit.

Here Chuck Roth and Elisabeth Coudoux live at the Threes Brewing, Brooklyn, New York, April 4, 2025
