The international Tuscany-based ensemble TMR – Tuscany Music Revolution features Australian alto sax player, Catalan oboist, English horn player, and vocalist Cèlia Tort Pujo, Italian bass clarinetist Michele Mazzini, violinist Virginia Sutera, pianist and keyboard player Alberto Braida, live electronics and synth player Ermanno Novali, percussionist Gabriele Lattuada, and drummer Francesca Remigi. TMR’s motto is: We stand against walls both in art and in life. The fourth album of TMR was recorded live under the stars of the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta in San Quirico d’Orcia, Tuscany, in July 2023, during the ensemble’s 2023 artistic residency.
There is nothing revolutionary in TMR’s aesthetics. The five-movement suite was free improvised, focusing on organic development, adventurous timbral research, and deep listening, allowing instant decision-making guide the music’s structure. The presence of the live electronics adds a mysterious, otherworldly dimension (and Novali mixed and mastered this recording), while the percussion and drums bring a stronger sense of propulsion. The suite alternates between an acoustic, lyrical, and almost folky or chamber-like tone and a more aggressive and even chaotic mode, highlighting the distorted electronics, keyboards, processed vocals, and the fragmented rhythmic patterns that intensify the tension and introduce noise as an essential element. The slogan “revolution” is expressed once toward the end of the third movement, but with no sign of revolutionary musical acts, and the suite swings again between a psychedelic-funky pulse and an openly emotional, lyrical coda.
