Albumin documents the second collaboration of idiosyncratic, experimental sound artists and sonic explorers – American, Tokyo-based Jim O’Rourke, known for his work with Sonic Youth and Wilco, and his electronic Steamoom experiments, and Dutch, Tilburg-based Jos Smolders, following Additive Inverse (Moving Furniture, 2021). O’Rourke and Smolders worked on this album over a period of three years, remotely and independently, each one in their own studio. Smolders mastered the album in his own EARLabs Studios.

O’Rourke initiated Albumin and has used his Kyma System for algorithmic programming, processing, and manipulating his sonic palette; later, O’Rourke and Smolders granulated and shaped these sounds into dark, disquieting textures. Both O’Rourke and Smolders were focused on the materiality
