Dan Kinzelman is an American, Foligno-based experimental reed player-composer. His Italian wind quartet Unfall (accident in German, formerly known as Dan Kinzelman’s Ghost) investigates the ‘ecological’ process of recovery and reuse of improvised musical materials and obsolete electronics. Unfall – trumpeter and French horn player Mirco Rubegni, alto sax player Manuele Morbidini, baritone sax and bass clarinet player Rossano Emili, and Kinzelman on tenor sax, clarinet and and bass clarinet, all four musicians also play on percussion – flirts with free jazz, minimalism, abstract sound art, and even exotic ritualistic music and dixieland, filtered and recomposed through musique concrète techniques, and referencing American writer and visual artist William S. Burroughs’ cut-ups and methods derived from tape music.
