Dutch self-taught vocal artist, sound poet, and visual artist Jaap Blonk’s first album on his own label Kontrans’ series of free improvised meetings was with American, Chicagoan percussionist Michael Zerang and Swedish reed player Mats Gustafsson (Blonk, Gustafsson & Zerang, 1996). Blonk has become a frequent collaborator of American double bass master Damon Smith in the last decade. Smith first recorded with his musical hero, Blonk, in 1998 in a trio with Italian sax player Gianni Gebbia and continued to work with him in the JeJaWeDa quartet (with trombonist Jeb Bishop and drummer Weasel Walter), with poet K. Curtis Lyle, and in interpretations of German Dadaist pioneer writer and poet Hugo Ball’s sound poems.

Blonk, Smith & Zerang was recorded live at the Hungry Brain in Chicago
