Koper8 brings together four idiosyncratic improvisers from both sides of the Atlantic who share a strong commitment to experimentation – the American, two major figures of the New York improvised-music scene – alto sax player Tim Berne and drummer Tom Rainey, who have been collaborating in different formats for the last thirty years, and the generation-younger Europeans – Italian baritone sax player Giuseppe Doronzo and Greek guitarist, synth bass player, and live-electronics artist Jannis Anastasakis, in their first recorded collaboration. The album was recorded at Shahzad Ismaily’s Figure 8 studios in New York in January 2025, and guitarist David Torn (a close collaborator of Berne) mixed and pre-mastered it.
