Chamber documents the first-ever meeting of Norwegian, Copenhagen-based young guitarist Hein Westgaard with American violist Mat Maneri, known for his work with his father, Joe Maneri, and other innovative improvisers like Matthew Shipp, Joe Morris, Joëlle Léandre, and Craig Taborn, in Copenhagen in July 2024. This duo will perform this summer in Norway and Denmark to celebrate the release of the album.
The album features seven intimate, free improvised pieces, recorded in a one-day session. Westgaard plays the first four pieces on electric guitar, and the final three pieces on acoustic steel-string guitar. The pieces’ titles are taken from the poem “Mile Fifty-Four” by American pianist-poet Eliot Cardinaux. The album is dedicated to the memory of Norwegian sociologist Odd Gåsdal (1951-2025).
