The quartet of Swiss double bass player Fridolin Blumer, trombonist Robert Morgenthaler, and drummer Heinz Geisser, with German vibes player Christopher Dell emerged from the collaboration of the Swiss quartet Ensemble 5 (led by Geisser, with Blumer, Morgenthaler, and Swiss pianist Reto Staub) with Dell on the album The Human Factor (Now-ezz-thetics, 2024). Beyond Scope is the debut album of the new quartet, recorded after its tour in the fall of 2024 in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria at WIM Studio in Zürich in October 2024.
The music of the quartet moves between free jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary music, or in Dell’s case, Neue Neue Musik (“referencing the heroic modernism of serialism, structuralism and Musique concrète as well as their processes”, as in his trio with drummer Christian Lillinger and double bass player Jonas
