Leaflight: Close Call documents a free improvised set of three idiosyncratic improvisers: British John Butcher on tenor and soprano saxes, German, Berlin-based vocal artist Ute Wassermann and her stream of imaginative vocalisations and bird calls, and the free pulses of Dortmund-based Martin Blume. Butcher collaborated separately before with Wassermann (in the ensemble fORCH) and with Blume. Wassermann and Blume were part of the quartet Speak Easy, with fellow vocal artist Phil Minton (who also played in fORCH). But Leaflight: Close Call is the first recording of Butcher, Wassemann, and Blume as a trio.
The album was recorded live at LOFT in Cologne in September 2024 and mixed and mastered by Butcher. It offers nine “Close Calls”
