Mark Cain is a West Australian woodwind specialist who also plays a variety of ethnic wind and reed instruments, instrument maker (from plumbing accessories and other recyclable industrial materials, including sound installations and sculptures), an experimental composer, and an educator. Cain’s career spans world music, jazz, experimental, and free improvised genres, including music he has written for dance, theatre, short film, and his numerous bands.
Threads collects fifteen solo soprano sax pieces for soprano sax that explore and experiment with the instrument’s outer boundaries, both in range and sonority. These pieces were freely improvised and in-the-moment with no second takes or overdubs, except a playful and inventive cover of Thelonius Monk’s iconic “Ask Me
