Colin Webster is a British, London-based, prolific, experimental, and free improvising sax player, known for his work with his instruments’ extreme sonic palettes, from minimal to maximal, constantly pushing boundaries. He has collaborated with key figures of the British free music scene and runs his DIY label, Raw Tonk.
Balázs Pándi is a Hungarian drummer (and journalist), known for his collaborations with Japanese noise maker Merzbow (aka Akita Masami), fellow Japanese Polymath Keiji Haino, guitarist Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth fame), and reed player Mats Gustafsson. He collaborated before with Webster in the album of Dutch bassist, electronics player, and producer Jason Köhnen (aka Bong-Ra), Antediluvian (Svart Lava, 2018). Electronics player Matt Cargill plays in the London neo-jazz wreckin’ crew Sly & The Family Drone, which hosted Webster on their album Molar Wrench (Hominid Sounds, 2018).
This ad-hoc, free improvising trio of like-minded, fearless sonic explorers was recorded at Hackney Road Studios in London in June 2019, and the aptly-titled Chewed Up And Spat Out is its only album to date. Webster plays here on tenor and baritone saxes. As the title suggests, it offers five brutal, merciless, and merciless pieces that attempt to pierce the sky with sax cries, shrieks, and wails, with relentless, roaring pulses, and nervous noises. This super intense session sounds as if it gets rougher and harsher as it progresses, aiming at total exhaustion as the ultimate liberation. The trio slowed down for a short while on the last piece, “Blot”, before resuming its explosive, cathartic ride.
The album is released in a limited edition of 100 cassettes with individual lino-print artwork by Webster, plus a download option.
