Paolo Sanna is an Italian, Sardinia-based drummer, percussionist, sound artist, and educator who plays on prepared drums and percussive objects and is interested in exploring and experimenting with sound, silence, and noise. Andrea Sanna has no family connection to Paolo Sanna, but he is a close friend of his. He is a classically educated pianist who became a jazz pianist, and then a sound artist and composer who is part of the Bologna-based electroacoustic improvisation scene.
Kumo documents Paolo Sanna and Andrea Sanna’s first recording, consisting of four electroacoustic free improvisations, recorded at P@SoundWorkshop in Sardinia in Summer 2024. Paolo Sanna plays on prepared drums and objects, and Andreas Hanna on synth and sampler. The interplay is intense, confrontational, chaotic, and abrasive, exhausting the sonic timbres of the fragmented, resonant percussive instruments, including gongs, and the vintage, otherworldly, and often industrial and noisy electronic sounds, as well as the intrepid, unpredictable sonic frictions of such an exploratory meeting. It lasts about thirty minutes, and most of the time it has the suggestive, cinematic power of a horror-ridden, sci-fi soundtrack. Only the last improvisation gravitates into a powerful, ritualistic, hypnotic groove.
The album is released in a limited edition of twenty cassettes and a download option on the label’s Bandcamp page.
