Transition Trio is the free improvising, chamber, and acoustic trio of Portuguese alto sax player José Lencastre, pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro, and Belgian archtop guitarist Dirk Serries. Sheets of Sound is the trio’s sophomore album, following Face Value (A New Wave of Jazz, 2024), and it was recorded at Sunny Side Inc. Studio in Anderlecht in a two-hour session in December 2024.
Sheets of Sound has no connection to John Coltrane’s famous, innovative improvisational approach. Sheets of Sound captures the opposite, a less-is-more, sparse and quiet approach, which is the essence of this deep listening, non-hierarchical, and “unbalanced trio”, as Pinheiro calls it.
