American, New York-based experimental electric guitarist David Torn has a sound and musical language of his own with a strong cinematic quality, spanning an undefined range of idioms and styles, and enjoying an extensive, decades-long experimentation with the guitar as a responsive electronic ecosystem, including with alternate tunings, effects, live signal processing and manipulation, looping systems, and touch-sensitive electronics. He sounds visceral yet weightless, and in his music, melody, noise, and atmosphere move through one another in a continuously shifting field of tone. Torn’s unique guitar sound appears on albums by Don Cherry, Jan Garbarek, Tim Berne, David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Sylvian, Bill Bruford, Madonna, Tori Amos, and k.d. lang.
